The Rospa test will be taken once the associate’s & tutors are happy the individual is ready. The test will be conducted by an approved examiner, usually serving or retired police riders. The result will be a graded pass at Bronze, Silver or Gold standard. The Gold standard is considered the highest civilian qualification available. The test fee's are outlined below.

Use of Controls:

 

Steering

This should be smooth, accurate and controlled.

Clutch

Your use of the clutch should show smoothness, delicacy and timing with the gear change lever.

Gears

Your ability to match your gear to road speeds and conditions and engine revs.

Brakes

Smooth control with correct balance of front/rear brakes for safe braking.

Throttle

Smooth operation and careful matching of throttle opening and speed to situations.

General Performance:

 

Smoothness

Careful balance of the controls and observations to show planning of manouvres.

System

A good understanding and use of the system of motorcycle control.

Positioning

How you position your machine for safety, stability and view on the approach to hazards

Cornering

Safety, observation and the correct lines for both rural and urban areas.

Signals

Used correctly, in good time and as required to warn or assist other road users.

Speed

Use of speeds up to maximum limits, where appropriate and safe. A brisk ride, with good progres where possible.

Overtaking

Although a possible hazard, they are neccesary feature for making progress. Their demonstration where appropriate and safe will be expected, within the speed limits.

General Ability

 

Deportment

Natural posture and control of machine, and attitude to other road users.

Vehicle Sympathy

Mechanical sympathy and consideration for your machine.

Judging Distance

ability to judge distances to other vehicles and speeds and use this information for your own acceleration or braking.

Motorways and Dual-carriageways

particular situations and hazards encountered on these specific roads, and how you deal with them.

Knowledge

Check of your knowledge of the Highway Code, Motorcycle Roadcraft and basic motorcycle mechanics by a some questions from your examiner.

The Advanced Test [Optional]

 

The RoSPA advanced test is regarded as the most comprehensive and challenging available to the public. It is monitored and approved by the Driving Standards Agency.  The test lasts around 90 minutes, and is taken with a RoSPA Examiner, all of whom are serving or retired Police Officers, within the UK.

 

The RoSPA Advanced Riding Test is unique as it is graded Bronze, Silver or Gold. A RoSPA gold is the highest civilian riding standard available and the holder will be a master of his or her art. To see more about what is expected, download our Motorcycle Test Guidelines.

 

  • The cost of the Advanced Riding Test is £85.00 inc VAT.
  • The cost of Interim* Advanced Riding Test £60.00 inc VAT.
  • The cost of Advanced Tutor test £65.00 inc VAT.

 

* The interim test exists for members who wish to take an additional test before their next three yearly retest is due, usually to improve their grade, and is offered at a reduced rate.

 

Unlike other Advanced Driving and Riding organisations, we require 3 yearly re-tests, to ensure that excellent riding standards are maintained. The re-test fee is included in your yearly subscription costs.

 

The Good News: RoSPA's Offer to loyal members!

The three yearly retest will be free of charge as long as your RoSPA membership is up to date.

In addition, if a member has ‘dual membership’, they will pay only one subscription but the three yearly retest for the first vehicle is free (subject to the membership being up to date) and the initial and subsequent three yearly retest for the additional vehicle test is charged at the interim rate.

How do I apply?

  • Once you feel you are ready, complete the Test Application
  • You will then be allocated your test to an examiner in your area. The examiner will be in touch to arrange a convenient date and location
  • The test will take place using your OWN motorcycle, which must be fully insured and legally roadworthy.
